sports camps

What a great way to introduce and spread the gospel: sports. Children and adults are already accustomed to participating in sports so adding the gospel is an easy transition. Each year several camps are held throughout the Berkeley and Dorchester county areas of the Screven Association. One of the longest running camps takes place at the Bonneau Recreation Center in Bonneau. It is a week-long day camp offering several different sports for boys and girls in 1st-6th grade. In addition to the sports camp, an afternoon session of VBS has been added. This is a joint effort in the Bonneau community by 6-8 local churches. In the Cane Bay area, a soccer camp is held at Lindera Plantation. It is hosted by Wassamassaw Baptist Church. This is a two-day camp focusing on soccer for girls and boys in 1st-6th grade. Sports skills are taught and practiced during the camps, but more importantly so is the gospel. Each camp has daily devotion leaders that talk with the children during their breaks. As a result, each year many seeds are planted, and many make decisions to follow Christ.

prison ministry

For more than 31 years churches and individual volunteers have supported this awesome ministry. Churches collect new toys and gifts for children birth to 14 years of age. Then they are taken to the facility where the inmates are guided by volunteers to pick out gifts for their children. The items are then wrapped carefully and packaged for shipping. Then off to the post office they go….and mailed directly to the children. This is truly a wonderful way to show Jesus’ love, by providing a toy, financial assistance for mailing and/or giving of your time to make this ministry possible. Not only does it meet an immediate need for the inmates, but it proves to be an act of kindness that will last a lifetime. What a wonderful way to show Jesus’s love for all people. Many have come to know Christ as a direct result of this ministry. If you would like to know how you can participate next year, please give us a call or send an email.

VBS Clinic & Preview

Screven’s Annual VBS Clinic and Preview is held in early March for the churches of the association. It closely mimics what Lifeway presents at Ridgecrest in January, but at no cost to our churches. The purpose of the clinic is to provide training for the VBS Leaders and helpers. Our clinic leaders are trained by the Lifeway staff. It also provides encouragement and a network of support. Everyone who attends benefits, from the first-time leader or helper to the seasoned vet. Statistics show that the more training a leader has, the more the salvation rate rises. The theme is presented with decorating ideas and crafts are suggested to help drive home the gospel message. The music is also introduced in worship rally. So much fun while learning and discovering the new Lifeway theme. Many of our churches use this opportunity to network with each other and share or swap decorations, therefore reducing the cost. Break-out sessions are offered in all the age specific classes, some rotations and a few others. Make plans now for your VBS Team to attend the next one!
